Designs Plus Volume 24: Free Project

Santa and Snowman by Janet Brooks

I like to jump start the Christmas spirit by making ornaments and crafty projects, especially ones that include the children and grandchildren. I designed this Santa and Snowman with children in mind. What could be more fun than glue, scissors and embroidered felt pieces all over the kitchen table? Children delight in posing these lovable characters.

No pattern is required, the design pieces stitch out on your embroidery machine. You simply cut them out and assemble with glue and a little bit of sewing. The designs are my Christmas gift to you. You may download them for free and enjoy them year after year.

Embroider one Nose Cuffs On White. Use red thread for the nose.

On Black Felt

On Flesh Felt
Embroider the Face on Pink. Use pink thread for the cheeks and black thread for the eyes.

Assembly
Cut out the five main body parts leaving a ¼″ seam allowance. Notice the body pieces are larger on one end. Sew them together on the stitching line of the embroidery. Leave an opening for the stuffing.

1. Stuff the body quite firmly with fiber fill. Close the opening by hand.

2. Cut out the head front and back leaving ¼″ seam allowance on the sides. Trim closely around the ball at the top of the hat. Trim the bottom edge of the head pieces to 1/8″ seam allowance.

3. Sew the side seams together but leave the top and bottom open.

4. Cut out the two leg pieces leaving a wide border around the design. Fuse the leg pieces to Craft Fuse for reinforcement. Trim the legs to ¼″ seam allowance on the sides and 1/8″ at the top and bottom. Cut out the boots leaving a one eighth inch seam allowance. Glue the boots to the bottom of the legs.

5. Let the feet overlap the edge of the legs.

6. Glue the legs together at the side seams with right sides together. The legs will have the side seams turned to the inside.

7. Pin or clamp the sides together until the glue dries.

8. Cut out the face and hat front leaving 1/8″ seam allowance. Glue the hat front and face to the head front. Cut out the hat back leaving 1/8″ seam allowance. Glue the hat back to the head back.

9. Some of the white felt will show on the sides of the hat. Color it red with a permanent marker.

10. Cut out the nose and mustache leaving 1/8″ seam allowance. Cut very close to the red nose but do not cut into the thread. Color the white edge of the felt around the nose red with a permanent marker. Leave the mustache edge white.

11. Glue the nose to the head leaving the mustache free.

12. Cut out the two left and two right arms leaving ¼″ seam allowance. Sew the arms with wrong sides together leaving an opening in the top. Stuff two pipe cleaners into each arm. Cut off the pipe cleaners that stick out past the arm. Finish sewing the seam together and close the opening in the arm.

13. Cut out the four white cuffs leaving 1/8″ seam allowance. Glue the cuffs to both sides of each arm. Trim the seam to 1/8″ matching the cuff edge.

14. Glue a white Pom Pom to the ball at the top of the hat. Stuff the head loosely with fiber fill.

15. Having assembled all the parts, position the large part of the body on top of the legs/base. Look at your Santa from all sides to decide on the right body language in positioning the stomach and rear.

16. Place glue on the top edge of the legs. Position the body on top of the legs and hold in place with pins until the glue dries.

17. Place the arms on the body. Glue and pin to hold the arms in place.

18. Place the head on top of the body. Study Santa's posture as you did in Step 15. Glue around the bottom edge of the head with the stuffing inside. Pin in place until the glue is dry.

Snowman Instructions
Use a metallic silver thread on the body parts and a stiff tear-away stabilizer for all of the embroidery. Hoop the stabilizer only and float the felt over the top using the temporary spray adhesive to hold it in place.

On White Felt
Embroider five repeats of Body Part On White.

Embroider two repeats of Arms On White. This will produce two right and two left arms.

Embroider one of Legs On White.

Embroider one Face On White. Use black thread for the mouth and eyes and red thread for the nose.

On Black Felt
Embroider one Hat Brim and Top On Black.

Embroider one Hat On Black. Use gold thread for the outlines, green thread for the holly and red thread for the berries.

On Red Felt
Embroider one Scarf On Red with gold thread.

Assembly
Cut out the five body parts and assemble referring to Santa's Step 1. Cut out the four head parts and the face. Assemble them in the same manner as the body.

Assemble the arms referring to Santa's Step 12.

Position the body on the legs and glue referring to Santa's Step 15 and 16.

Attach the arms referring to Santa's Step 17.

19. Place the head on top of the body. Again study the snowman's posture. Apply glue to the top of the body and position the head. Hold the head in place with pins. You can leave the pins in place for added strength because they will be covered by the scarf.

Apply Wonder Under to 8″ square of black felt. Cut the hat sides, top and brim leaving a wide seam allowance on all pieces. Fuse the wrong side of the hat parts to the black felt with the Wonder Under. This reinforces the hat and hidesn the wrong side of the embroidery on the brim. Trim all seam allowances to 1/8″. Cut out the center of the brim.

20. Glue the hat side seams together and pin to hold in place until the glue dries.

21. Apply glue to the lower edge of the hat. Attach it to the brim and hold in place with pins.

22. Apply glue to the top edge of the hat and place the hat top on it. Pin to hold in place. After the glue has dried remove the pins and stuff the hat loosely with fiber fill.

23. Place the hat on the snowman checking it for attitude and style.

Glue the hat in place and pin to hold until the glue dries.

Sew the scarf pieces together end to end. Place it around the snowman's neck, glue and pin it in place until the glue dries.
