Designs Plus Volume 23: Free Project
Gift Tags by Eileen Roche

Embroider a simple gift tag by transforming a plain appliqué circle into a free-standing design.
Materials
• Two 4″ squares of appliqué fabric
• Crisp tear-away stabilizer
• 1/3 yd. of 1/2″ wide ribbon
• Glue stick
Step 1. Stitch
Hoop tear-away stabilizer. Place one 4″ square of appliqué fabric in the hoop. Embroider color #1 and #2.
If using the tag in a vertical fashion as shown, then place the ribbons at the top and bottom of the circle, placing ½″ of each tail inside the circle. The long tails should extend away from the appliqué. Use a glue stick to temporarily hold the ribbon to the stabilizer. (Figure 1)

Slide a second piece of fabric under the hoop, covering the outline. Stitch color #3. Remove the hoop from the machine and carefully trim the excess fabric from the front and back of the appliqué. Trim the excess ribbon from the inside of the circle. (Figure 2)

Place the hoop back on the machine and complete the design. Remove all excess stabilizer.
Step 2. Embellish
Use double-stick tape to layer and secure the gift tag to a wide piece of lace. Tape the lace to the bag.
