Materials
• 1¾ yd. printed cotton fabric
• 1¾ yd. medium green cotton fabric
• 1 yd. tan fabric
• Low loft batting for lap size quilt (45″ x 60″)
• Tear-away stabilizer (for quilt)
• Water soluble stabilizer (for lampshade)
• 12″ x 12″ piece of tulle (for lampshade appliqué)
• Lampshade
• Glue stick or fabric glue
Step 1. Make the Quilt
Cutting
From printed fabric
• Cut 2 strips on crosswise grain, 4″ x 39½″
• Cut 2 strips on lengthwise grain, 4″ x 54½″
• From the remaining fabric cut twenty seven 5½″ squares
• Cut 6 crosswise strips, 2-½″ wide.
• Reserve for binding.
From tan fabric
Cut 28 pieces approximately 9″ x 9″, or 5½″ square with enough extra to secure in medium hoop. Cut 28 similar pieces of stabilizer.
From green fabric
• Cut 2 strips on crosswise grain, 1½″ wide
• Cut 2 strips on lengthwise grain, 1½″
• Reserve the remaining fabric for backing.
Step 2. Embroider the Quilt Blocks
Open Creative Cross alphabet in embroidery software and enlarge each letter to 3″. Hoop a tan square and stabilizer, center design, and embroider. Repeat for each letter of the alphabet.
Choose a design to fill one additional tan square. Hoop and embroider these squares.
Trim all pieces to 5½″ square.
Step 3. Make the Quilt
NOTE: ¼″ seam allowances are used throughout.
Alternate alphabet squares with printed squares, and sew together in nine rows of six squares each. Attach a green strip to each printed border strip. Attach to quilt, mitering corners if desired. Layer and quilt. Sew binding strips end to end. Fold lengthwise, and apply binding around quilt.
Step 4. Embellish the LampshadeStep 4. Embellish the Lampshade
Hoop tulle and water soluble stabilizer. Open Creative Cross alphabet, choose a letter and embroider. Trim excess tulle and stabilizer close to the letter, then soak away the remaining stabilizer according to manufacturer's instructions. Attach the letter to the lampshade with glue stick or fabric glue.
