  • 1/2 yd. silk dupioni

  • 1/2 yd. lining fabric
  • 5" of fur trim
  • 1 1/2" of 1/4" decorator cord
  • 1/3 yd. ribbon
  • 14" of Armo-Weft (fusible interfacing)
  • Polymesh stabilizer
  • Temporary embroidery adhesive
  • Tear-away stabilizer
  • 1/2 yd. beaded trim
  • Heat set rhinestones
  • One button
  • Decorator tassel
  • Wonder tape
  • Free stocking pattern available at www.dzgns.com
Step 1. Prepare the Fabric

Cut a 20” x 18” rectangle of the dupioni. Center the stocking pattern on the dupioni and chalk mark around the stocking pattern. From the remaining silk, cut the stocking back. Cut a front and back from the lining fabric.

Hint: Cut off the curved area of the toe from the lining fabric, it will be easier to stitch and does not need to extend completely inside the outer fabric.

Fuse Armo-Weft to the wrong side of the dupioni rectangle. Note: The Armo-Weft is used in addition to, not instead of traditional stabilizer.

Step 2. Embroidery

Arrange embroidery design templates in a pleasing manner to create the look of allover embroidery within the chalk marked area. Pin or tape in place.

Spray polymesh stabilizer with temporary adhesive and position on the back of the stocking. Hoop and stitch each of the designs, using the templates to assist in positioning the design.

When all embroidery is complete, press gently from the wrong side on a well padded surface.

Step 3. Make the Stocking

Cut out the stocking front.

Place stocking front and back right sides together and stitch. Clip curves. Repeat for the lining.

Turn dupioni stocking right side out and press. To attach decorator cord thread the machine with thread that coordinates with the dupioni. Select a zig-zag stitch, adjust the width to 3.0 and the length to 2.5. Attach an edge-joining foot to the machine; position cord along one edge of the guide, the finished edge of the stocking along the other edge of the guide.

Place lining inside the stocking, wrong sides together. Baste around the upper edges. Turn stocking lining side out.

Cut a 17 1/2” x 5” fur strip. Adhere Wonder Tape along the header of the beaded strip. Remove the paper backing; secure along one long edge of the wrong side of the fur trim. Stitch the trim in place through the header.

Note: Depending upon the width of the header, it may be necessary to use a zipper foot to stitch the trim in place.

With right sides together, seam the short ends using a 1/4" seam allowance. Position the top edge of the cuff along the top edge of the stocking, right side of cuff against the lining. Be sure the cuff seam is aligned with the heal side of the stocking. Stitch with a 1/4" seam allowance.

Turn the stocking right side out, folding the cuff down over the seam allowance. Fold length of ribbon in half, right sides together. Seam the short ends. Pin inside the stocking along the heel seam. Tack in place 2" from the bottom of the cuff and again 1" from top of cuff.

Use heat-set rhinestones for added sparkle. Stitch a button inside the cuff to hang a decorator tassel from.
