Step 1. At the Computer -Dress Back
Open design 1BudLg from the Sue Box Golden Classics Miniature Roses in customizing software. Notice the design has four colors, two of which are green. Change the second green (the fourth color) to gray. This step is required for color sorting later.
Rotate the design 180 degrees, and move the rosebud to the top of the hoop, lining up the right side of the design with the center grid line. Copy (CTRL+C) and Paste (CTRL+V) the design. Move the second design directly under the first. Repeat until you have filled the hoop with a single row of rosebuds (five will fit in a 4″ x 4″ hoop). Insert a basting stitch around the completed design.
Select all and sort the colors. Save the design as ROSEBUD BACK.
Step 2. Invisible Zipper
Cut the back out and mark the darts. Do not sew the two back sections together. Use a pintuck foot to insert an invisible zipper in the dress back. Move the needle as close to the teeth as possible.
Step 3. Dress Back Embroidery
Hoop two layers of poly mesh stabilizer. Locate the center marks on the top and bottom of the inner hoop. Place a ruler on the hoops'center marks and draw a straight line on the stabilizer. (Heavy cut-away is shown here for clarity).
Close the zipper and lay the dress on a flat surface. Use a ruler and water soluble marker to draw a straight, vertical line just to the left of the zipper on the left dress back.
Open the zipper. On the left back, unfold the zipper tape and seam allowance so that only one layer of fabric is at the drawn line.
Insert three pins to hold the zipper tape open. Spray the hooped stabilizer with temporary adhesive. Position the fabric with the pins on the stabilizer. Line up the edge of the zipper with the line drawn on the stabilizer. Push the pins through the stabilizer and smooth the fabric.
Place the hoop on the machine and select the design. Without thread in the needle, stitch color number one,the basting outline. See that the right side of the basting box lines up with the line drawn on the fabric. You may have to restart several times if your machine stops without thread.
Designer Tips
Add a basting box to an embroidery design to help in aligning design repeats.
Make a note of the design position illustrated on the embroidery machine screen in case of power failure. Repeats of linear embroidery designs can be quite challenging to duplicate in the event of an interruption.
When embellishing the zipper of a garment, make sure the top of the design is at the top of the zipper.
Use a dampened cotton swab to remove water soluble markings from delicate fabrics.
If the lines do not match, reposition the fabric and try again. It may take a few attempts to achieve perfect alignment. Use the edit feature on the machine to make any necessary adjustments. Make sure the top of the design is parallel to the top of the zipper.
When satisfied, add thread to the machine and stitch the basting box. Proceed with the remaining colors until finished.
Reposition the garment in the hoop to add the next line of rosebuds. Take special care to line up not only the right basting line but also the top of the basted box with the previously stitched design.
Repeat until the dress back is filled. The sample is a size eight and has 22 rosebuds. There are four repeats of ROSEBUD BACK and two of 1BudLg.
Step 4. At the Computer - Train
To layout the top of the train, trace the outline of the V-shaped pattern piece onto a larger piece of fabric using a water-soluble marker.
Open design RoseCnr in customizing software.
Using the lasso tool, select the left rosebud spray and split the design. Delete the two rosebuds as shown.
Now select the three rosebuds at the top and split the design.
Copy and paste the three rosebuds and move them to the other side as illustrated.
Omit the large roses in the center, leaving only the center leaves. Do not delete the colors on the buds on each side. Save the design as Train Center.
Using the lasso tool, select one of the three rosebud sprays. Rotate the spray so that it is in a horizontal position in the hoop. Select the other spray and place it in mirror image of the first spray as illustrated. Save the design as Train Spray. Insert tracing paper or transparencies into the printer and print templates of Train Center and Train Spray.
Step 5. Embroidery - Train
Tape the templates onto the train, centering the Train Center design. Tape the Train Spray templates an even distance from the center design. Embroider the designs.
Step 6. Silk Flowers
Position one silk flower in the center of the embroidered designs. Use a hand needle and thread and stitch through the middle of the petal and tack it down once. With each additional needle penetration come up through the middle then take the needle through a bit of the petal about 1/16″ from the middle and pull that bit of petal towards the middle. Continue pulling in bits of the petal on all four sides forming a small flower. Add a bead to the center of each flower. Remember that no two flower petals are exactly alike on real flowers so select petals with different shading.
